Do you know how many slums were cleared by 1960?
413 acres !!! Moses got rid of 413 acres of slums in New York by 1960. I know he created a lot of infrastructure in U.S, However, I think we have to see both side of coin to explain about some one's achievements. He thought slums as a spreading cancer and clearance and super block urbanism were the only effective solution to remove slums in New York. I don't want to blame him and mention about right and wrong matters. However, we have to point out side effect with slum clearance. Moses shaped his project to advance his main three goals. first he wanted to recapture the middle class in New York city because most of the middle class had left New York at that time, second he tried to enhance the city's brain power by supporting university. last, he wanted to promote New York's preeminence. Even though Robert Moses had good motive to achieve his three goals as I mentioned above, slum clearance uprooted thousands of poor people and reduced supply of low-income housing because the new housing was much more expensive than site tenants could afford and the supply of low-cost housing did not meet the rising demand. No more than 15% of those had to displace from renewal areas to public housing. Moses said " No one has yet suggested a way to clear slums without dislocating people" However, I think his planning and clearance were just policy to promote rapid growth rather than humanity. he had to suggest some idea to support poor people because No one could get rid of slum in the world perfectly.
